Exploring Fractals

'Bark Bathing Suit' is the beginning of a series of compositions exploring the premise that aesthetic images can induce staggering changes to the body, including reductions in the observer’s stress levels. Studying aesthetics is considered a huge possible potential benefit to society. This project is based on current research in the University of Oregon. Researchers are untangling just what makes particular works of art or natural scenes visually appealing and stress-relieving – and one crucial factor is the presence of the repetitive patterns called fractals. Through exposure to nature’s fractal scenery, people’s visual systems have adapted to efficiently process fractals with ease. This project is based on Photography taken in Curragh Chase, Co. Limerick.

The next composition from the Curragh Chase series further explores the impact of nature’s aesthetics. In the 1980's, architects found that patients recovered more quickly from surgery when given hospital rooms with windows looking out on nature. Other studies since then have demonstrated that just looking at pictures of natural scenes can change the way a person’s autonomic nervous system responds to stress. Both ideas have been contrasted in this composition with natures fractals peering over and framing the austere & ghost like remnants of the man-made building.

The following composition from the Curragh Chase series probes the idea of “fractal fluency”; through exposure to nature’s fractal scenery, people’s visual systems have adapted to efficiently process fractals with ease. Research found that this adaptation occurs at many stages of the visual system, from the way our eyes move to which regions of the brain get activated. This fluency puts us in a comfort zone and so we enjoy looking at fractals.
